Baby Sleep Pillow

Baby sleep pillow products and baby sleep positioners have been known to help infants sleep better. However, there’s also risk factors associated with baby pillows/ sleep positioners that you should be aware of.

For instance, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, (SIDS) is often an unexplained phenomenon that some sleep experts believe can be caused by obstructions to a babies breathing.

Many doctors caution that infants shouldn’t sleep on their tummies since it could cause SIDS. For that reason some manufacturers have created baby sleep positioners to prevent a baby from turning over onto their stomach. These pillows are usually made of a foam material that, (while designed to help,) these products may get in the way of a babies airway.

When babies move their head in a sleep postioner it might be possible to cause suffocation due to it conforming to the child’s face. For this reason it’s not advisable to use these devices with young infants.

Instead it’s a safer choice to swaddle infants until they are strong enough to safely turn over on their own accord. Once they are stronger it’s better to let babies sleep in the position they want.

Typical sleep habits of newborn babies usually mean for the first three or four weeks after birth the baby sleeps a great amount of the time. Newborns usually only wake to waking to satisfy the demands of their hunger. It’s as they grow older that they begin to spend more time awake and start to sleep less frequently.

The great thing is as the baby moves past the first month the baby begins to sleep for longer periods at a time. This is a good time to maintain regularity in the babies hours of sleep. When a baby gets in the habit of spending more time awake in the day light hours, you can avoid restless and disturbed nights.

You might consider getting in the habit of putting the baby down for a mid-day nap time, for about two hours or so. The baby should be resting before dinner time and if put to bed too late can result in a sleepless night.
