How Does Acupuncture Work?

February 3, 2009

How does acupuncture work is a common question that’s best answered like this: It is a type of comprehensive health care, which is used to prevent and treat disease and relieve pain and even anesthetize patients for surgery. Research shows that started  in China and has been used  for over 5000 years.

The first account is in the book called Nei Jing which in English is defined as  the Yellow Emperors Classic of Internal Medicine. The contents of this book dated around 200 BC. At that time, needles are used instead of metal and stone used, moxibustion and herbs to aid a patient.

Acupuncture not only  prevents  disease by inserting very small needles into the skin, it also treats specific illnesses especially in the anatomical body.

The principle of this concept is that the disease occurs because of an imbalance in your life force known as Qi. It is estimated that this flow of 14 channels in the human body, known as meridians of the arm to the organs and functions. If a blockage or obstruction of one of them when it comes to succumbing to a disease or illness.

The imbalance of Qi can go, either because of Yin and Yang. A person may not be normal if there is harmony between the two and this is what acupuncture is to try to achieve. This can only be restored by stimulating these acupuncture points so that your Qi can be adjusted, balanced and harmonized.

In addition to using needles, practitioners use as friction, heat, pulsed electromagnetic energy and pressure to stimulate these points to balance the energy flow in the body to further reduce the health.

An example of this is sonopuncture when an ultrasound system that transmits sound waves is applied to these points on the body. Some use a tuning fork vibrating and other devices.

Acupressure and here is another example, the fingers are used to relive pain. This can be used alone or with other manual healing techniques.

Pulse of electromagnetic energy because our bodies are used to produce tiny electric shocks, but which influence the function, growth and maturity of certain types of cells. By inserting needles in these areas, it stimulates and alters the neurotransmitters in the body and the patient feels better after treatment. It is also sometimes used for diagnosis and evaluation.

According to the World Health Organization or WHO, here is a list of diseases that acupuncture is used. These include acute bronchitis, colds, cataracts, Toothache, gingivitis, hiccups, ulcers, constipation, diarrhea, headache and migraine, Meniere’s disease, osteoarthritis and more.

In the United States, acupuncture is often used to treat chronic pain conditions body and mind disorders. Some people even recommend using acupuncture to quit smoking.

However, acupuncture is not without risks. Hematoma May develop if the needle punctures a circulatory system. Otherwise, the pneumothorax May occur if the needle is inserted too deeply. There is also a risk of contracting HIV and hepatitis, if the needle is not properly sterilized.

Now that you know what acupuncture is, we must not forget that this is only an alternative and not a form of medical treatment. This means that we still need to be checked by a professional in the field of medicine that can determine the severity of their disease or illness.
